San dunes with wind-created ripples and shadows.

“Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain.”

-Carl Jung

Sandplay therapy is a gentle, nonverbal approach that allows experiences to be explored and processed without relying solely on words. Using a tray of sand and a collection of small objects, clients create scenes that reflect internal experiences, emotions, or patterns that may be difficult to articulate.

Sandplay works by engaging the nervous system and the brain’s natural capacity for symbolic processing. This can be especially helpful when experiences are complex, early, relational, or stored more in the body than in conscious memory. Many clients find that sandplay allows insight and integration to emerge organically, without needing to explain or analyze every detail.

While sandplay has roots in Jungian psychology, it is widely used today as a trauma-informed, attachment-sensitive modality. In my work, sandplay is integrated with relational, somatic, and EMDR-informed approaches and is always optional. It can be particularly supportive for clients who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or limited by talk therapy alone, but it is never required.

Sandplay offers another way to listen inward, allowing meaning, clarity, and movement to develop at a pace that feels safe and respectful.
